Exploring Creative Careers and Engineering Pathways...
On Wednesday 6th October a group of Sixth Form pupils travelled to the Excel Exhibition Centre in London to participate in the Create Your Future UCAS event. They were greeted by a number of universities offering many varied and exciting creative courses, from fashion design to music production, acting and theatre production, interior design, film, architecture and gaming, amongst many amazing courses.
Accompanied by Mr Griffin-Raphael and Mr Harkness, pupils and teachers were taken back and inspired by the variation and the range of opportunities on offer, and where each of these courses could take them. The pupils enjoyed the valuable opportunity to engage with the course providers on the stands, gaining a first-hand insight into what courses entail and what career options are available after they have completed the course. There were also many talks and performances from lecturers and current students, preparing the students for interviews, writing portfolios, and highlighting career opportunities and current issues in music, fashion, product design and so much more.
The pupils came away from the trip with a better understanding of what they could do next, with many seeing courses that they didn’t previously know existed.
Meanwhile, on the same day, Mrs Goffe took some other Sixth Form pupils to the Equal Engineers Careers show in Bristol. With the likes of Airbus, Atkins and BAE Systems there, it was an excellent opportunity to speak directly to employers. Pupils were able to speak to those who appointed and ran apprenticeship schemes, as well as current employees of the firms. It was a valuable chance for the pupils to learn how they can enhance their prospects for career and degree opportunities in a wide variety of engineering disciplines.
