Chris Hemmings, journalist, author, broadcaster and speaker, came to King’s to promote a healthier idea of what it is to be a man.
He was authentic and honest, and this resulted in him captivating his audience. He described the macho lad culture at university, which ultimately damaged his sense of self. Chris also talked about his own sexuality. His message was one of hope: to encourage everyone to be themselves and not fit a stereotype of what it is to be a man. He wanted the pupils to stand up and call out damaging behaviour because, he said, every little intervention helps. He encouraged boys to have meaningful conversations, to support each other and be more tolerant of those not fitting into a traditional rigid structure of masculinity.
Chris will return for further workshops on consent, healthy relationships, empathy and mental health.
