When we study Maths we may do so at many levels: we may learn to understand how things work at a basic or complex level. Wherever our pupils stand on the continuum, Maths will be needed by them throughout their lives. At King’s, Maths teachers enjoy the journey through Maths with their pupils as they discover new ideas, master important techniques, learn to appreciate its power, beauty and just how much fun can be had with Maths.
Maths can be challenging in its nature, absorbing in its realisation, beautiful in its simplicity and powerful in its application.
Pupils from King’s have gone on to study Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, Economics, Sciences and Accountancy at many Russell Group universities.
Workshops run each evening in the Maths department from 4.30pm for pupils who wish further enrichment or who need extra support or catch up.
All 3rd to 5th Form pupils are prepared for the Edexcel 9-1 IGCSE in Mathematics. The course covers topics in Number, Algebra, Graphs and Sequences, Shape and Space, and Sets and Data Handling.
We encourage pupils to prepare for and enjoy considerable success in the UK Mathematics Trust individual and team challenges, in addition to attending external Mathematics events and masterclasses as appropriate.
We also offer lessons in preparation for the AQA Level 2 Certificate in Further Mathematics to pupils keen to advance more rapidly within the 5th Form (recommended for those considering taking Further Mathematics in the Sixth Form).
High achievers in 4th Form are invited to attend the ‘Maths Fest’ Society, where pupils are introduced to enriching mathematical ideas and ways of thinking which prepare them for the UK Mathematics Trust Intermediate Enrichment events: UKMT IMC, Inter-School Maths Team Challenges such as the UKMT Maths Feast and other Maths Circle events.
At King’s, we prepare pupils to sit Edexcel A Level Mathematics, which includes the study of Pure Mathematics (mainly Calculus, Co-ordinate Geometry, Algebra and Trigonometry), Statistics and Mechanics.
Pupils who particularly enjoy Mathematics may opt to study A Level Further Mathematics in addition; it is usually found to be an enjoyable and stimulating challenge. The study of A Level. Further Maths can boost the grade achieved for A Level Mathematics, and Further Mathematics is highly respected by (sometimes required by) mathematically rich degrees such as Mathematics, Physics, Engineering.
Sixth Form extra-curricular clubs are on offer within the Mathematics department to enhance mathematical enrichment and enjoyment of our pupils and to help prepare for UK Mathematics Trust individual and team events. We support and encourage our pupils as they attend a variety of external inspiration lectures and activities during the year.
