A successful Ten Tors practice expedition to Dartmoor

Our King’s Bruton 35 mile and 45 mile Ten Tors teams ventured onto Dartmoor for their second training expedition of the Easter Term in preparation for the event in May. Everyone was hoping that the weather would be more favourable for the three groups and it was. The two days were dry with clear skies and there was no rain, mist or snow which is what had welcomed all the groups on their last visit to Dartmoor in February.

Camp skills throughout the weekend were more efficient and groups set off from the top of Okehampton Camp, where the actual event will start in a couple of months. All three groups headed south, trying to acquaint themselves with some of the Tors that they may encounter on the actual event. Sittaford Tor, White Barrow, Stannon Tor, Little Kneeset, Little Mis, Holming Beam… were ticked off by the groups.

The weather allowed the cadets to understand the beauty of Dartmoor as they could actually see it! And walking in good weather put a spring in the stride of the three teams, and they walked with real purpose and to a good level of fitness. Navigational Skills were very good and there are some knowledgeable ‘pathfinders’ in the teams.

There were some very tired limbs and sore feet and shoulders, but that is part of the Ten Tors Challenge - there has to be some discomfort to appreciate the journey the young cadets are on.

Onwards to the last training session in April before the actual event on the weekend of 9th to 11th May.
