Pupils began by recording the Old Docks before heading to the M-Shed Museum where there were some brilliant displays highlighting Bristol’s past and links to the slave trade, the city’s evolution and also the recent protests. At the Arnolfini Gallery we were able to experience Rinko Kawauchi’s photographs displayed both as moving, hanging and large-scale imagery. Kawauchi’s work is often described as poetic and lyrical, due to her imaginative way of presenting the world around us. This was an immersive and meditative experience enjoyed by all.

We split into two branch of groups with the artists getting stuck into the array of street art including the infamous, Girl with A Pierced Eardrum by Banksy at the Albyon Dockyard. This led us to Spike Island featuring two exhibitions. A film made by Danielle Dean was well received as our pupils enjoyed the dark edge to the fictional/ doc evolving around the artist's upbringing in Hemel Hempstead and wider social issues. The social club installation worked well to set the scene as the artist attempted to blur the imaginary and real.

In between, our art historians continued to search for inspiration for their exam topics at the Bristol City Gallery and Museum to take in the permanent collection, which ranged from the art of Ancient Egypt to Victorian painting. There was a vast amount to see and link to their exam themes.

Both groups met up at the RWA at the top of Queen's Road, as we delved into the abstract world of Paule Vezelay. Pupils enjoyed exploring her artistic journey from Bristol to Paris including her fascination with the drawn line.

A thoroughly enjoyable experience, as Bristol is well and truly alive with lots of inspirational and progressive exhibitions. We look forward to getting back into the studio to build on their starting points.
