The Easter Term is always one that highlights the significant transition that occurs in the education, and life, of a 6th Form pupil, and this year was no different.
For the Upper 6th, January signals the beginning of the final stretch towards exams and, importantly, their futures beyond formal education. The UCAS deadline at the end of January saw a King's record 84 UCAS applications submitted (including Old Brutonians). Excitement soon followed as offers arrived, opening doors to prestigious institutions such as Edinburgh, Imperial, UCL, and KCL, along with impressive offers for medicine.
However, preparing for the future extends beyond university applications. This term, the Upper 6th have also engaged in practical workshops on personal finance, student finance, self-defence, and first aid tailored for students.
In contrast, the Lower 6th have been at the beginning of their journey, exploring their future pathways. Speakers from the University of Lancaster, The University Guys (international university experts), and our Apprenticeship Adviser, Mrs Goffe, have provided valuable insights into the various opportunities available. These sessions were complemented by trips such as the UK Universities Exhibition in Exeter, featuring over 150 universities, and a Careers in Sport event at Brentford Stadium. Additionally, pupils have benefited from numerous one-on-one meetings with futures experts, including Mrs Goffe, Mr Daws, and Mrs Garland. Further steps have been taken with CV and personal branding guidance from freelance profile consultant, Annabel McDade. The application processes to universities and apprenticeships will begin in earnest next term.
Both year groups have also gained valuable perspectives from enriching talks, including a powerful personal account of the Holocaust by Rob Angell (Holocaust Education Trust) and a thought-provoking session on HIV by Emma Cole of Positive Voices, which challenged common misconceptions.
All of this has taken place alongside the busy life of a 6th Form pupil at King’s - committed studying, and Upper 6th mock exams, as well as engaging in high-level debate in the inter-house competition, excelling in sports and music, and demonstrating leadership through Prefect, Head of House, and other senior roles.
As the Easter break approaches, the 6th Form pupils are ready for a well-earned rest. However, for the Upper 6th, this will be a crucial period of intense revision ahead of their pivotal exam weeks. I wish them every success in the challenges to come.
Will Daws - Deputy Head, 6th Form
