Renowned composer, arranger, and choral leader Alexander L’Estrange visited King’s to lead an inspiring series of choral workshops with the Chamber Choir, School Choir, and combined Choirs of King’s and Bruton Choral Society, in preparation for the upcoming Community Choral Concert at King's in the Memorial Hall on Sunday 16th March at 5pm. The event will feature a performance of Alexander L’Estrange and Joanna Forbes L’Estrange dynamic and uplifting work, Freedom! The Power of Song.
Alexander, celebrated for his jazz-influenced choral compositions and innovative approach to vocal music, brought energy, enthusiasm, and expertise to each session. The workshops focused on developing vocal technique, ensemble cohesion, and musical expression, all while exploring key passages from Freedom! The Power of Song.
In the Chamber Choir workshop, the ensemble worked intensively on achieving blend, balance, and precision, refining the harmonies and rhythmic intricacies of Alexander’s setting of the Latin text Oculi Omnium.
The School Choir benefited from Alexander’s engaging teaching style, focusing on storytelling, phrasing, and diction to bring the lyrics of Freedom! to life. Bruton Choral Society are once again joining forces with King’s Bruton and enjoyed an uplifting workshop that emphasised expressive singing, dynamic contrast, and the joy of collective performance. Alexander provided valuable insights into the inspiration behind the piece and coached the choirs on bringing out its rhythmic vitality, rich harmonies, and emotional depth.
With just a few weeks to go before the Community Choral Concert, these workshops have provided an essential foundation for what promises to be a fantastic community event involving pupils from the local Primary School, Hazlegrove Prep School, Port Regis Prep School and St Mary’s Bruton Children’s Choir. We are immensely grateful to Alexander L’Estrange for his inspiration and guidance and look forward to bringing Freedom! The Power of Song to life on Sunday 16th March accompanied by the Call me Al Quintet which is Alexander’s own professional band.
