Winchester Cathedral, with its origins dating back to 1079, stands as a masterpiece of medieval architecture and a testament to centuries of English history. As one of the largest cathedrals in Europe, it is renowned for its stunning Gothic nave, intricately carved choir stalls, and the breathtaking Great West Window. The cathedral is also the resting place of notable figures, including Jane Austen, and has long been a centre of spiritual and musical excellence.

Music for the service included Preces and Responses by Herbert Sumsion, with Psalm 143, set to a chant by Pye, resonating beautifully within Winchester’s vast and atmospheric acoustics. Sebastian (U6th Form, New House) acted as Cantor for the service and executed this role with distinction.

The Canticles were sung to a setting in A minor by Thomas Tertius Noble, while the Chapel Choir’s moving rendition of Herbert Howells reflective anthem, Like as the hart desireth the waterbrooks, filled the sacred space with beautiful harmony.

Looking ahead, the Chapel Choir will return to Salisbury Cathedral to sing Choral Evensong on Bank Holiday Monday 5th May at 5.30pm. This promises to be another wonderful opportunity for the Chapel Choir to perform in one of the country’s most revered ecclesiastical settings complete with the tallest spire in the UK.
