Our wonderful Grounds Team helped with the clear up operation after the floods in Bruton...
After a thunderstorm and prolonged heavy rain on Tuesday 9th May, Bruton was flooded. In under an hour, over 20mm of rain fell! The video compilation was filmed by pupils and staff around Bruton. It shows views to Lusty Bridge, Dropping Lane as a river past Lyon, water pouring over the wall at the bottom of Wellesley garden and the footbridge at King's over the River Brue. We are so grateful to our Grounds Team who helped with the clear up operation, clearing sand and stone debris from the road and pavement in Bruton with their tractor.
King's Bruton Head Gardener, James, said:
"The floodwaters of Tuesday obviously affected everyone, inside the School and also the wider community. The pavement is very busy with pupils and also residents of all ages, including one with a mobility frame who came past while we were clearing up, so it felt important that we used the equipment we have to hand and help to shift the obstruction. Sam from the King's Gardens Department, was more than willing to grab tools and help, as a local resident himself and also having elderly relatives nearby. It is always a pleasure to give back to the community."
Driving home was very challenging on Tuesday evening. Dan Cupit - Deputy Head, Academic said at the time:
"I think all roads are going to be very challenging this evening. But please be aware that there is heavy flooding in North Cadbury, Galhampton and around Castle Cary, with some schools/ after school clubs reporting that pupils are currently stuck. Please also be aware that Dropping Lane is currently a river and impassable to nearly all vehicles. There are also reports of a tree down on the back road near Redlynch after a lightning strike. The Wyke Road is flooded in areas, only large vehicles getting through at present. Bruton Road towards Sexey’s is flooded under the railway bridge. On the road from Castle Cary to Yeovil has heavy rain running off the fields with hazardous conditions at present. There is heavy flooding around Sparkford/ Mudford and on the Evercreech Road there are reports that a section of this is very close to being impassable."
