The BTEC Hospitality Culinary Showcase was a Triumph...
On Tuesday 9th May, our U6th Form BTEC Hospitality pupils hosted a Culinary Event to showcase their skills and customer service.
Local hospitality businesses, parents, staff and Governors were invited to an ‘Asian Inspired’ afternoon tea. This fitted nicely into the pupils' Unit 11 Asian Cuisine, and inspiration was taken from an afternoon tea we experienced at The Sanctum Hotel in London. This event formed part of their final assessment for Food and Beverages including Alcohol Service.
Over the Easter holidays, pupils were asked to apply for job roles for the event, and teams were allocated; Kitchen Team, Creative Team, Front of House & Service and Beverages. It was important that teams worked together to formulate a plan, practice recipes, compile cocktails/mocktails and organise the event all themselves. There were three project leaders who served as ‘Hospitality Prefects’ to help the event run smoothly.
I am incredibly proud of their achievement, and despite heavy thunderstorms, and some of the guests unable to make it through the flood water, the pupils remained cool calm and collected. Their incredible teamwork, leadership and collective dedication helped deliver a truly spectacular culinary treat for guests. Combinations of unusual flavours and attention to detail were paramount, and feedback from our Hospitality guests was very complimentary, especially about their professionalism.
Some of our BTEC Hospitality L6th Form pupils came to support with service and the collaborative approach, and their hard work was very appreciated. The pupils have learnt many important skills in delivering this event, which I am sure will prove invaluable in their further interests and further education after King’s. Their ‘Showcase Event’ was indeed a triumph and something they will remember in future years to come.
