A summer term sport roundup...
An incredibly busy term of sport saw huge success for our pupils, both in terms of performance and participation as our tennis, cricket and golf teams, as well as athletes, demonstrated all that is good about sport at King’s Bruton. As ever, running a successful games programme would not be possible without the energy, enthusiasm and dedication shown by the staff involved, and I am immensely grateful to the whole staff common room for their continued support, not only this term but throughout this academic year. A special thank you must also go to this term’s Heads of Sport, Mr Forder, Mr Crump and Mrs Ireland, who have led our tennis, cricket and athletics teams with care and attention, whilst ensuring that pupils at King’s have a memorable and enriching sporting experience in the Summer term.
On the tennis courts, there were lots of exciting and closely contested matches over the course of the term, and a special mention must go to the U15A girls’ team who remained undefeated this term, winning all of their matches in some style. It was also wonderful to see record numbers opt for tennis as their games option, and we look forward to seeing how the programme continues to grow. The cricketers have also had a stellar year, with the highly talented boys’ 1st XI producing some outstanding performances, particularly in their cricket week at the end of term. It was also brilliant to see the U15A boys progress to the latter stages of the National T20 cup with the standout moment being the defeat of Taunton School who fielded a large number of Somerset County players. The girls’ cricket programme continues to go from strength to strength as for the first time we have fielded three girls’ cricket teams, which sets us apart from a number of competitor schools in the area.
On the track, the athletes have enjoyed a good season with meets having a good balance between being highly competitive or more low key, as pupils had opportunities to compete in a relaxed environment. Congratulations must go to Oliver W, Robert B and Rory M who all competed for Somerset at the Southwest Track and Field Championships. Term then culminated in an excellent Inter-House Athletics Competition and well done to both Lyon and Priory who came out winners. The Golf Development Programme demonstrated its success as we had more numbers than ever before and there were some very good individual performances in the fixtures versus Sherborne and Downside School. Thank you to Mr Higgs and Jill Byrne who continue to drive this programme forward. Term ended with six players being invited to play versus the Old Brutonian Golf Society at Woking Golf Club, which is certainly a highlight of the year for those pupils involved.
With so much sport having taken place over the course of the year, the biggest thank you must go to the pupils themselves for their hard work, dedication and positive approach to sport at King’s, as well as the parents who frequent the side-lines and support all of our teams with such positivity, passion and warmth.
