On Thursday afternoon, the King’s Bruton Under 16 Girls’ Hockey Team travelled to King’s College Taunton to contest the Somerset County Championship.
Placed in a pool alongside Wellington School and the hosts King’s College, it was a fantastic afternoon for the King’s Bruton side. In the first pool match versus Wellington School, King’s Bruton were far too strong for their opposition, winning 9-0 in what was a statement to the rest of the competition. This excellent start to the tournament was followed by a comprehensive 3-0 victory versus the home side King’s College who couldn’t cope with the pace of King’s Bruton’s attacking play and their clinical finishing. Having secured first place in the pool, King’s Bruton lined up against Taunton School in the semi-final.
Playing their third match in a row, King’s played patient hockey against Taunton’s deep defence and consequently they were rewarded with yet another 3-0 victory to set up a final with Millfield School. The final was an exciting, fast paced match and it was King’s who deservedly came out on top, scoring the winning goal with five minutes to go to secure a 1-0 victory and to become Somerset County Champions for the first time. It was a great afternoon with every member of the squad contributing significantly to what was a tremendous victory - to score sixteen goals and concede zero is very impressive indeed. King’s Bruton can now look forward to playing in the Regional Finals held at Clifton College in November.
