On Monday 8th May, the Chapel Choir sang a service of Choral Evensong at Wells Cathedral. The Chapel Choir were once again warmly welcomed by the Cathedral staff. The music for the service included Responses by Joanna Forbes L’Estrange, Psalms 42 and 43 set to chants by Wesley and Atkins respectively. The canticles were sung to Herbert Sumsion's in A major. The anthem was a new work by Joanna Forbes L'Estrange The Mountains Shall Bring Peace commissioned by the RSCM in honour of the Coronation of HM King Charles III.
The video is of the Chapel Choir rehearsing before the service, set to The Mountain Shall Bring Peace by Joanna Forbes L’Estrange.
My congratulations go to all those involved on a hugely successful visit. The Chapel Choir were on excellent form and the psalm singing was particularly good with careful attention to diction and variation of dynamics. The canticles were expertly delivered too with lovely shaping of phrases. The anthem was very exciting, particularly as it was the first time the piece had been performed at Wells Cathedral. Particular mention goes to Hugo (U6th Form Lyon House) who acted as Cantor for the service as he has done so regularly during the 6th Form. It was wonderful to have lots of parents, staff and other supporters in the congregation.
The service was followed with a Chapel Choir meal at ASK Italian in Wells; it was a wonderful occasion and a great way to celebrate the success of the Chapel Choir throughout the year. Next term, the Chapel Choir will sing a service of Choral Evensong at Salisbury Cathedral on Wednesday 22nd November 2023 - all are very welcome to attend.
