3rd Form Art pupils visited Hauser & Wirth Somerset to see the Eduardo Chillida and Thomas J Price exhibition...

An exciting series of art trips to Hauser & Wirth Somerset marked a welcome return to getting our 3rd Form artists out of the classroom to gain valuable first-hand inspiration. Over a fortnight period, each class had an opportunity to engage and respond to the current exhibitions. Our focus for the experience was to inspire pupils to create their own exciting artist investigation research pages to enrich their current projects.

Pupils really enjoyed the Thomas J Price exhibition, with his large-scale figurative sculptures. It was amazing to see these works in this space, and I feel this is an artist that we will be learning much more about. His work is progressive and looks towards changing narratives of representation. In essence his work challenges the viewer to consider who do we expect to see in public monuments?

On our whistle stop tour we were blown away by the amazing exhibition of works by Eduardo Chillida. Following on from our recent formal elements project Chillida’s work resonated with recent themes in relation to line and form. We are looking forward to getting back in the studio to play and experiment further with line, collage and sculptural forms inspired by Chillida’s connection with nature.

A huge thank you to Matilda who has been recently appointed education assistant at Hauser & Wirth Somerset, and the team for making us feel most welcome. Along with all the additional support given to help enrich our pupils experience by sharing lots of insights into the ideas, context, materials, and processes behind key artworks.
