On Thursday 10th October, ten artists, who are working in the media of Textiles for either their GCSE or A-Level coursework, visited Alexandra Palace for the Stitching and Knitting Show. The Show included a theatre and catwalk, galleries of well  known Textile artists, Textile graduates and the Festival of Quilts winners, demonstration stands and stalls selling a variety of crafts and other up and coming Textile artists.

We started the visit listening to Textile Artist Richard Box, who explained his journey into Textiles and the processes of his creations, including dragging out old paintings from his shed and repairing them through his appliqué, free hand embroidery and hand stitching techniques. His work was also exhibited at the Show, and he encouraged his viewers to touch his work. This made his work a highly sensory experience and allowed us to connect further with it to understand every stitch he puts into each piece.

The artists then went to explore the Show for themselves and find inspiration for their individual project. Some watched a catwalk show of best friend sewers who strutted their sewn creations on the catwalk. Many showing off upcycled creations and spreading the word for better sustainability in the fashion world.

It was a great day out, and everyone was in great spirits. When I asked Lilah to sum up the day in a few words she replied "inspiring, eye-catching and motivational". The trip that has truly opened the King's Bruton Textiles artists to the endless possibilities in Textile art, and I am excited to see how they translate this experience into their own work.
