A Sports Roundup at the beginning of the Christmas Term...
Pre-Season Rugby
The 1st XV squad started their preseason with a lot to get through. The team maintained the intensity throughout the day and the new pupils settled in well. We travelled down to Exeter to play Topsham RFC. We started slowly but as the game moved on, it was clear to see we were playing the better rugby. Topsham’s 10 ran straight through our defence three times and scored. However, we battled well and scored some excellent team tries. We certainly have some work to do on our 1 on 1 tackling but apart from that, we were happy with the overall performance. Men of the Match went to Charlie W & Rian U.
On the Sunday, we played Well’s, Dorchester and Sherborne Rugby Club. Again, we started slowly against Well’s and tactically we could have played away from their big forwards. Dorchester was a similar affair but a massive improvement in defence. Sherborne was the game where we really stepped it up and kept to the structure and played some superb rugby. We really looked like a team and have set the benchmark for the season. Men of the Tournament were Oliver L and Alex B.

Pre-Season Hockey
A new look senior girls’ hockey squad enjoyed a hugely positive pre-season camp which saw the team play six matches across the four days. Having trained hard at King’s, the girls hosted Llandaff Cathedral in a match which saw Caroline L score two goals on her first start in a King’s Bruton shirt.
The next day, the squad travelled to Cardiff Met to contest the annual Schools’ Invitational Tournament. The aim with each game was to keep improving and whilst the two matches versus Cardiff Met University and Dauntsey’s saw the team concede too many soft goals, there were glimpses of what this young squad is capable of. Marcia K was voted Player of the Day after two excellent performances.
On Day 2, the girls demonstrated what they had learnt with two much improved performances against two physical Ellesmere College and Denstone teams with the outstanding Molly W being named Player of the Day. Having utilised the Cardiff Met state of the art Performance Analysis suites, the girls lined up to play Prior Park in their final match and they played by far their best match of pre-season, both in terms of their outletting and making their chances count. Jasmine S with two and the returning Millie W found themselves on the score sheet with Jasmine and Jess V being voted Joint Players of the Day.
A huge thank you to all of the girls whose efforts meant they made huge progress throughout the course of pre-season and this gives them a solid foundation from which they can continue to build from.
