The Chapel Choir sang Choral Evensong at Salisbury Cathedral...
On Wednesday 22nd November, the Chapel Choir travelled to Salisbury Cathedral to sing a service of Choral Evensong. It was the first time the Chapel Choir have performed at Salisbury Cathedral and a real treat to sing in the beautiful acoustic accompanied by a magnificent organ in an incredible building with the tallest church spire in the UK!
The music for the service included the Preces and Responses by Richard Ayleward, Psalm 108 set to a chant by Sir Walford-Davies, Sir Henry Wood’s setting of the Canticles in D major and the beautiful evening anthem Save us, O Lord by Sir Edward Bairstow. The choir were in good form with good attention to intonation and clear diction. One of the vergers at the cathedral commented after the service that she did not have to look at the words of the psalmody as the choir sang them so clearly.
It was particularly good to be singing on the Feast Day of Saint Cecilia - remembered today as the patron saint of musicians, composers, instrument makers and poets.
There were a good number of parents, staff, friends, family, and Old Brutonians in the congregation for the service and it was lovely to perform in a full Quire. Well done and congratulations to the Chapel Choir on their high standard of singing. The Chapel Choir will next sing Choral Evensong on Wednesday 31st January 2024 at Winchester Cathedral.
