120 interviews in 3½ hours at our U6th Form Practice Interview Scheme...

That was what lay in wait for the U6th Form pupils, and they certainly rose to the challenge. Each U6th Form pupil had two “stranger” interviews with two professionals from 20 volunteers from amongst our parent body, who had very generously given their Saturday morning to help. This was the culmination of a training series, which included writing CVs and cover letters, and interview skills workshops and practice. Following the 20-minute interviews, pupils were given feedback on how to improve their interview technique, which was further supplemented by written feedback delivered through the tutor groups later in the week.

Whether pupils had applied for farm manager, accountant, marketing, events manager, biochemistry researcher, solicitor or one of many other roles, they were grilled by interviewing experts for high-powered roles. The challenge of speaking about oneself and “selling” one’s credentials is not easy, and there were nerves aplenty. However, the interviewers were impressed by the quality of the answers and the thought behind them. As we have come to recognise from King’s U6th Form pupils, they spoke confidently, clearly and enthusiastically, yet with a humility which recognised how much they had to learn.

It was a hugely successful morning, and pupils should now be in a better position to confidently take on interviews that really could lead to life-changing outcomes in the future. My thanks go to the parent volunteers who made the event possible.
