An Assembly on the emergence of AI in schools...

Whilst Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been around since the 1950’s, recent developments in AI, and the technology behind it, mean that it has become far more widely accessible. Whilst social media, banking, transport and many other sectors have used AI for years, the emergence of ChatGPT has raised the profile of AI. Since ChatGPT was released in November 2022, we have seen many companies release new AI tools and programmes. The benefits of AI are already being seen in many areas of our lives, with research focussing on how AI can be used in the future. However, with the increase in exposure to AI, schools are having to educate pupils as to the advantages and dangers of AI, as well as look at how AI can help support education. Whether it be ChatGTP, KhanMigo or personalised tutoring/ content, it is clear that AI can be used to enhance the education of pupils when used well, and alongside existing teaching methods.

Whilst pupils at King’s will gradually be exposed to different programmes that use AI, all schools await further guidance on the use of AI, especially with regards to examinations and assessment. It is clear that AI could have a huge impact on education, and that schools must educate pupils about AI, and look at how it could be used in the future to further enhance education. The reality is that all pupils have been using AI for many years in different areas of their lives, but the opportunity to further personalise support and content is an encouraging development in education. It is certainly an exciting development, but an area that must be approached with caution and one that requires continual monitoring and review.
