We had a fantastic time celebrating the European Day of Languages on Wednesday 26th September with a multitude of cultural activities on offer, writes Agathe Webb, Head of Modern Foreign Languages.

To get us in the spirit, the 5th Form started with a Swedish game called “Kubb” led by Mr Eriksson who is half-Swedish. As cooking seems to be much in demand we continued with the U6th Form who cooked a tomato & caramelised tarte tatin followed by a coulant au chocolat. The food was delicious although I am not sure how it would be judged by the more knowledgeable food critics we are presented with from the TV!

At our weekly Church Service, it was lovely to hear Mr Beverly, the Chaplain speak different languages. The Lord’s prayer was also read out in Spanish, French & Portuguese by native speakers. In the afternoon, we concentrated on idioms & tongue twisters with our L6th Form French pupils and the 3rd Form pupils had fun dancing Spanish traditional dances. We completed the day with a fun French film called “L’Ascension” in the Fitzjames Theatre (with the obligatory popcorn).

It was a very successful day and it was such a pleasure to give the pupils a taste of languages and the different cultures in our everyday society. King’s Bruton is in the fortunate position of having a strong cultural base from which to tackle the issues of today and it is clear that this day, even in a small way, helped. An album of photos from the day can be seen below!
