Medicine and Chemistry Careers presentation...

On Friday 12th November, our 5th Form Set 1 Chemistry class took part in an online career talk entitled Medicine and the Role of the Chemist which was organised through the STEM Ambassadors programme.

Presented by Associate Professor of Materials Science at the University of Brighton, Dipak Sarker, the pupils were treated to an interesting half hour about the roles of chemists in society. He described how his own research on nanotechnology is used in drug delivery and  he went on to describe how chemists, products made by chemists and chemistry skills are essential in all areas of the health service from Doctors and Vets, to Pharmacists and Pharmacologists and then to Radiographers and beyond. He also touched upon how chemists and chemistry graduate skills pervade other areas of society such as in the study of geological phenomena and in oceanography, amongst others. It was helpful to our pupils in clarifying their understanding of some of these potential careers, it was certainly interesting.
