Eight pupils from King's Bruton attended a lecture, given by Dr Joanna Buckley from Sheffield University, as part of Sheborne Girls Schools celebration of 'Women in Science', which also coincides with British Science Week 2020.
The talk entitled 'A Taste of Chemistry' began with Joanna giving pupils a synopsis of her career to date, in which she encouraged pupils to keep their options open and introduced them to some very diverse careers which utilise the highly invaluable skill set that a chemistry degree would provide. Joanna then explained some of her past and present research projects involving edible chemistry, for example why mustard and chillies taste different, which is the best drink to choose if you have been eating a very hot curry and why it works effectively, and how do manufacturers get the gooey centre into chocolates.
