Exercise New Start: Yoxter Ranges

On Thursday, 30th September and Friday, 1st October, King’s Bruton CCF, Advanced Infantry Section departed to Yoxter, Priddy for their first military exercise since C19 hit our shores in March 2020.

The cadets had trained hard for ‘Exercise New Start’ and despite the poor weather forecast of torrential rain and strong winds, they were in high spirits as they departed in a convoy of mini-buses.

The enemy moved out to set up their camp and the Friendly Forces moved to their location. Both groups carried out camp craft skills in the field and the evening exercise saw the three Sections undertaking a Recce Patrol to determine the enemy positions. They then set up an ambush which the enemy walked straight into. After the night skirmishes, it was back to camp for a late supper and then sleep.

An early alarm call, 0600hrs, a quick breakfast and patrol, saw the enemy manning their positions as they came under attack from the Friendly Forces who performed section attacks on the three enemy positions. For their first military skirmish, the Advanced Infantry were excellent, and the cadets learnt so much. A quick reorg and debrief and then it was on to stage two of the Field Day which was a 100m Range Day with live ammunition. Cadets zeroed in their rifles in the morning session, and then in the later part of the day, undertook competitive shooting in the prone and kneeling position with 10 shots at the targets in both positions. Scores were calculated and badges will be awarded. All cadets passed and the staff were very impressed with their enthusiasm, attitude and shooting skills.

An excellent Field Day for the Advanced Infantry which bodes well for future exercises.
