I very much enjoyed the String and Piano concert, here are some of my highlights, writes David Gorodi, Director of Music.
The String Quartet opened the concert, they were excellent; they performed Pachelbel’s Canon, the middle parts pushing through the texture at the appropriate places, it was a stylish and mature performance. Vki gave a very accurate performance of the 1st Movement from Mozart’s Sonata No. 8; this is a difficult piece calling for real control and dexterity. Vki shaped the phrases beautifully, giving a controlled and stylistically pleasing performance. Constance played Fiocco’s Allegro with passion and commitment, it’s a challenging work which Constance performed very well. Other highlights of the evening for me came from some of our cellists. Felix who is better known for his outstanding piano playing gave a beautiful performance of Schubert’s Ständchen; he really made the cello sing by playing with great passion and intensity. Emma performed Goltermann’s Etude-Caprice, this was the best performance that I’ve heard from Emma so far; it’s a demanding piece calling for great technique and dexterity, playing with great energy and commitment Emma captured the style and intensity of the work. My congratulations to everyone who performed and my thanks to the music staff involved. An album of photos from the concert can be seen below.
