Spectacular Winter Concert

The Winter Concert was spectacular, writes David Gorodi, Director of Music.

The Orchestra opened the evening with a splendid performance of Wagner’s Rienzi overture. George on 1st Trumpet was in fine form leading the brass section valiantly; I was particularly pleased with the attention to detailed phrasing and dynamics. The Military Band took a trip down Broadway, performing a medley from Jesus Christ Super Star, once again it was the brass section which shone, the Trombones were magnificent. The Choir then sung Hallelujah!, the chorus from Handel’s Messiah, I loved the trumpet obbligato, it took me back to our performance at the Royal Albert Hall. A special mention to Joe who played in every item, playing 1st Violin in the String Quartet; this performance had great ensemble and musical awareness. The Brass Ensemble played both delicately and subtlety, some delightful hints of Christmas Carols. The Chapel Choir were excellent, they gave assured performances with careful attention to blend and diction. I really enjoyed the Jazz Quintet, in particular Felix, his improvisation is very mature and sophisticated. One of the highlights of the evening was the Chamber Choir who performed two contemporary works, My Lord has Come by Will Todd was divine, simply beautiful. The evening was brought to a close by the Big Band; brilliant performances from Abagael who sounded just like Amy Winehouse. Likewise, we heard a stunning voice from Katie, her first performance with the Big Band was very self-assured - I can’t wait to hear these young ladies in Swing into Spring next term! My congratulations to all involved. A video of the concert and an album of photos can be seen below.
