Foul weather on Dartmoor did not dampen the spirits of our Ten Tors teams...
King’s Bruton 35 mile Ten Tors Teams ventured onto Dartmoor at the weekend for their second training expedition in preparation for the event in May. Thinking that the weather couldn’t possibly be any worse than the first expedition was a big mistake, but the forecasted prediction of 95% rain all day was correct, unfortunately.
A 0530 alarm call on Sunday morning, wet tents were packed away and both groups jumped into minibuses for their destinations. The girls' group arrived at Postbridge to walk on North Dartmoor and the boys' group went to Combestone Tor to walk on South Dartmoor.
The weather was foul all day. Rain, mist and a biting wind were the staple diet. No one else was seen on the moors, far too sensible!! To their credit, both groups displayed amazing fortitude and resilience. On only their second expedition, they kept together and kept spirits high as they trudged around a most sodden and desolate moorland, carrying a full pack. Streams were more akin to rivers, marshes were very, very boggy and the wind was biting. Navigational skills were very good as was the ability of both groups to maintain a level of humour and fortitude in the most trying of conditions.
It is hoped that for the last expedition of the term, the sun will decide to make an appearance on Dartmoor.
