Geography Educational Trips

On Friday 16th June, 47 pupils from the 4th Form travelled to the Dorset coastline to complete their GCSE Geography physical fieldwork. After two hours on the coach, the pupils could not wait to get started on Swanage beach. After a briefing from the Geography department, they began measuring the build up of sediment on each side of the wooden groynes on the beach to investigate whether or not longshore drift was occurring. We were blessed with beautiful weather, and the pupils were able to spend the morning collecting the data they needed in glorious sunshine.

After a break for lunch (and an ice cream!), we travelled on to Studland where pupils spent some time exploring the sand dunes and practising some more fieldwork techniques, all within site of Old Harry Rocks. The data that pupils collected over the day will be analysed and written up in their lessons this week, and they will be required to answer questions on this in their GCSE exams next summer.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable day out in the field, and I would like to thank the pupils for their enthusiasm and hard work throughout the day.
