An enjoyable educational trip to Aquae Sulis for the Classics pupils...
Several of the Latin pupils at King’s Bruton enjoyed a Christmassy trip to the Roman Baths in the beautiful historic city of Bath - or, as it was known to the Romans, Aquae Sulis, ‘The Waters of (the goddess) Sulis’. We enjoyed a lesson, where pupils honed their Latin translation skills by deciphering the inscriptions found around the baths, followed by examining a number of artefacts. After lunch and some time in the Christmas market, pupils explored the baths themselves, visiting the various rooms of the complex, from the apodyterium (changing room) to the tepidarium (warm room), putting themselves in the shoes, or sandals, of an ancient Roman, who would have visited the baths for health, leisure and business. We felt very lucky to have this site, one of the best sites of Roman Britain in the country, on our doorstep, and a wonderful time was had by all!
