On Wednesday 22nd November, a group of 13 GCSE Design & Technology and A Level Product Design pupils enjoyed a superb trip to the Morgan Motor Company in Great Malvern, Worcestershire. The pupils were able to learn about the history of this car’s production and we were fortunate enough to experience first-hand how these iconic cars are manufactured. Morgan cars are hand-built using a combination of traditional and modern manufacturing methods, with sub-components made in-house complementing those bought from other suppliers, including BMW and Ford who supply the engines for the current range of vehicles made here.

Throughout the tour we were able to observe the highly skilled workforce involved in a variety of woodworking, metalworking and upholstery skills. The apprenticeship here lasts for five years! The pupils got close to many of the unique features of the assembly line at the Morgan Motor Company. This allowed our pupils to see in detail the many and varied individual parts of the production process and assembly line, literally seeing cars emerge from a timber and aluminium shell to the high-quality finished product desired by many enthusiasts globally. A large number of cars contain bespoke touches as the vehicles are produced to the individual requirements of the buyer, no matter where they are in the world. Before we departed, we were also able to visit the Museum which plots the history of this exceptional company as well as meander through the shop and showroom, admiring a range of finished and historic vehicles. A memorable day was had by all.
