Celebrating the Chinese New Year...

新年快乐!

It was Chinese New Year last Sunday, the 22nd of January. This year is the Chinese Year of the Rabbit. It was a cold sunny day and Ms Checketts took all the Chinese pupils to Bristol. When we arrived in Bristol, it was just in time for lunch, and we went around Bristol trying to find the specific Chinese restaurant of our choice which didn’t take any reservation. There were ten of us and so we couldn’t get in, unfortunately, because there was a huge crowd of people waiting.  Luckily, we found a good restaurant called Wong’s which had dark wooden panels and traditional décor. They gave us a huge round table, and we started to order from the menu, which was only in Chinese. Ms Checketts didn’t know what we were going to eat! The food was served very quickly and was all ready in time. It was an amazing meal! There were ten different dishes; one of them was salt and pepper prawns, which was cooked perfectly, and the traditional Chinese hairtail fish, which Ms Checketts had never had before, was really crispy and crunchy. And we also had some Baicai, (Pak Choi) which was cooked to perfection and very tender. After finishing everything, we left and had a lovely walk around Bristol. Some of us went back to the Chinese grocery near the first restaurant and stocked up on some typical foods to take back to school.

It was a good, relaxing day for us, and we had a chance to spend some time together and talk in our own language, and above all, have a really good, traditional meal. Of course, we would have preferred to be at home at this time of year, but it was a real pleasure all the same.
