The Confirmation Service was a joyous occasion...
Saturday evening saw us gather in chapel (St Mary’s) for our annual Service of Baptism & Confirmation; I’m pleased to say it was a joyous evening.
What’s confirmation all about? Well, it’s a chance for individuals to publicly declare for themselves their faith in Christ. Why do I say, “for themselves”? Well, many of us might have been baptised/christened when we were a baby. We have no memory of it - let alone any say in the affair! At that service, our parents, godparents, and loved ones will have made numerous promises to raise us in a knowledge and love of God. Yet, when we become young adults, we might choose to say, “I now want to make those promises for myself - I want to confirm them to be what I now personally believe.” They’re big, weighty, and exciting promises! Thus, for the past twelve weeks, a group of 15 pupils have met once a week to discuss what those promises mean. During these sessions, it has been an immense privilege to lead these 15 pupils through the truly good news of Jesus Christ in the Bible. He is the most loving Lord and Saviour who gives us “life and life to the full.” Indeed, it was that aspect which Bishop Rob Martin (who led Saturday evening’s service) picked up on during his sermon - he exhorted us all to live lives where we remain attached to Jesus and so go on to bear much fruit. Our thanks to him, and also to the superb Chapel Choir who sang a beautiful anthem and led our singing with great skill and volume.
