Contemplating Christmas is a bit like viewing a diamond - you can find beauty from so many different angles. Thus, on Wednesday, during our chapel service we spent time thinking about one particular aspect of Christmas: the incarnation.

So, what’s the incarnation all about? We looked at Matthew chapter 1, where an angel tells Joseph, ‘“Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”  All this took place to fulfil what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).’ Thus, at the heart of the good news of Christmas, is the truth that God came to be with us. With you and me in our messy broken world. With us, to help us. We don’t have a distant, aloof God - but a God who is close because he is with us. Yet how is he with us? In spirit? Mystically? Virtually? In a message? No, it’s even more wonderful than those ways. Our second Bible reading, from John 1, told us: ‘The Word (God) became flesh and made his dwelling among us.’ God has come to be with us by becoming a human (Jesus, the baby born in Bethlehem). He took on flesh and bone like you and me. That’s a mind-blowing truth. It means that if we’re believing in this God, our faith is in a God who knows what it’s like to dance and party. He knows what it’s like to weep and mourn. He even knows what it is like to suffer and die. How comforting! Indeed, the Christmas Carol is right, we have “Tidings of comfort and joy!”

Alongside contemplating the above, we were blessed to spend time hearing the Chapel Choir give a beautiful rendition of the Christmas Carol, ‘The Angel Gabriel’. We also had a lot of fun as a whole school singing ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’ in rounds! Congratulations to Wellesley House for singing the best!
