On Thursday 19th of October the 4th Form artists spent the morning in a variety of different workshops at King's. The textiles workshop was run by Sophie Standing, a brilliant local textiles artist who's taken her inspiration from African wildlife while she was living in Kenya. She talked about her life and work and showed the pupils plenty of her own techniques so that they could learn them and practise on their own pieces. Throughout the morning the pupils created some fantastic responses.

Hiro Takahashi took the ceramics workshop on the theme of trees and showed the pupils her techniques with carving, moulding, slip work and building. Pupils created some beautiful responses and hopefully these will survive the firing and have a top glaze put on them to finish them off.

The last group was a painting workshop run by Frances Watts who showed the pupils her portfolio and shared in her techniques. It was a chance for the pupils to experiment with oil paints and get a feel for the medium on canvas. Frances showed pupils exactly how she works and got them to sketch out first, then apply their undercoats, and finally a top coat. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed the experience and left wanting more.

In the afternoon, we headed off to the New Arts Centre at Roche Court. We were taken around the gorgeous sculpture gardens where the pupils were informed about all the artwork. It's always a very engaging experience and the perfect introduction to art appreciation first hand. Pupils carried out plenty of drawings and recordings which will be inserted into their coursework. The art educators at Roche Court were fantastic and the pupils left feeling fulfilled and satisfied with their experience.

All in all, it was a wonderful day, and one that we will be looking to repeat again next year.
