Bishop Michael is our new diocesan bishop for Bath & Wells, having been installed just over a year ago. Thus, it seemed a right and fitting gesture to welcome him to the School so that he could have a look around and meet lots of pupils and staff. After a brief meeting with the Headmaster, Bishop Michael enjoyed a tour around the School with L6th Formers Monty & Harriet. Bishop Michael saw various lessons, visited New House, The Queen Elizabeth Music School and many other corners of the campus. It was then lovely for me to have a brief catchup with Bishop Michael in the Chaplaincy before we joined several staff for lunch (a roast on Wednesdays).

The highlight of Bishop Michael’s visit was him coming to speak in our whole-school Chapel Service after lunch. One of our school prefects, Ellie, gave us our Bible reading from John’s first letter: 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” This was the passage Bishop Michael spoke on for us. Bishop Michael explained how love can mean so many different things. The love in our passage is an unconditional love - god loves us regardless of any prerequisites. He loves us so much that in Jesus Christ he willingly gave up his life for us. Will we rejoice in and accept that love? And then will we seek to mirror it in our day to day lives? What a joyous message - what a inspirational challenge.
