Well, the Perrott Hill Baking Superstars gave the judges the run for their money on Tuesday when they came up to work here with us at King’s! Their Fruit Flans were so well risen and so beautifully decorated that Dr Corrigan and Mr Cupit seriously had their work cut out for them trying to choose the winners.

Having been challenged with the brief ‘Create an imaginative Summer Fruit Flan which could be presented at an important party or event’: they beavered away, baking, designing, whipping cream and using their knife skills to produce a whole range of amazing designs. Inspiration included the Eiffel Tower, the Burj Khalifa and Summer Sunshine. Luckily, they had our three fabulous Sixth Form BTEC Hospitality volunteers to help them - thank you Lani, Sunny and Liv.

Pupils were tasked with making a fresh fruit flan with cream, where individuality and a light touch was the key to success! With a support crew of three of our L6^th Form BTEC Hospitality pupils (Lani, Sunny and Liv), 16 pupils made the lightest of sponges adorned with soft peaks of cream and decorated with fresh strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and kiwi fruit. Their wonderful creations showcased skills such as accurate weighing of ingredients, fine cutting skills, awareness of presentation and perfecting the mixing of a fatless sponge.

Huge thanks to Mr Cupit (Deputy Head, Academic) and Dr Corrigan (Deputy Head, Teaching & Learning) for taking on the role of judges, and congratulations to all the pupils who took part. The flans looked absolutely amazing.
