A remote Advent Service with a chocolate boost

Chaplaincy Life at King's

On Wednesday we held our annual Advent Service.

As with all our chapel service for the past two terms, due to Covid-19 restrictions, we have had to run our services via the medium of pre-recorded videos. Videos have provided us with lots of wonderful opportunities to add in new exciting and different elements to our services. During these more restrictive and limited times when school can feel a bit reduced, I’m keen to use chapel videos to inject some chaos and healthy fun into the pupils’ lives. Thus, our Advent Service involved running the first ever Inter-House Chocolate Advent Calendar Eating Race. Each House selected two pupils who were filmed as a pair tackling their way through eating an entire chocolate advent calendar as fast as possible. The winning House (Hannah and Phoebe from Arion House in an impressive 59 seconds!) won two tubs of Celebrations and Roses chocolates to enjoy with their whole House! You can watch the video of the race below.

We then spent time reflecting on whether there’s more to Advent than just the big countdown that Advent calendars seem to suggest this season is all about. Looking at Matthew chapter 24, verses 36-44 we saw how advent marks the time of year when Christians remember Jesus came to earth in human form as saviour, and that one day in the future He will return again to bring wonderful justice - all the wrongs and pains of this world will be held to account. It is, therefore, worth getting prepared for his amazing return. What fantastic and hopeful news for our world today.

So yes, let’s enjoy our advent calendars. Yes, let’s make the most of the jollities and excitements of the season. But why not invest in the greatest news behind it all!
