The Headmaster reflects on the highlights of the Christmas term

Life at King's

The Christmas term is the longest, and probably the busiest of our three terms, and the whole school is always ready for a deserved rest once the holidays start.

The Christmas term also sees two of the main school events - Remembrance and the Carol Service. The Military Band always leads Bruton Town on the parade up the High Street to the Town’s act of remembrance at St Mary’s War Memorial. The Band, and George (U6th Form New House) who played The Last Post and Reveille, were excellent and Remembrance, given that our assembly hall is a also a war memorial for fallen OBs, will always be important at King’s.

The Chapel Choir were outstanding in our evocative candlelit Carol Service in St Mary’s, and the Chaplain, after a very busy day for him, as he also leads Hazlegrove in the morning for their carol service, led the service with thought, humour and sensibility.

Throughout the term, all our sports teams have played with skill and commitment. Our senior teams, the rugby 1st XV and the girls’ hockey 1st XI, both had highly successful seasons. It is a testament to the quality of our hockey coaching that all four indoor hockey teams reached the Regional Finals again. The Winter Concert was packed with quality and variety while the school musical ‘Chicago: Teen Edition’  was a triumph. The cast was definitely the youngest I can remember, while our three talented Lower 6th Formers, Ashtyn, Grace and Annabel stole the show with their acting, singing and choreography. The future of King’s drama shine very bright indeed.

I was very privileged to attend my final Old Brutonian London Lunch, as King’s Headmaster, in the Ironmongers’ Hall last Friday. My wife, Helen, was invited by the OBA as their guest, and Helen and I were delighted that our two OB daughters, Anna and Natalie, were amongst the 150 OBs attending. It was a wonderful occasion and in my speech, I told the OBs how well today’s pupils were doing at King’s and how proud I am to be the School’s 33rd Headmaster. I am very grateful to all our teaching and support staff for their professionalism and sheer hard work which have made this term such a success.

Best wishes to all the King’s community for Christmas and New Year.
