Our Chinese pupils celebrated their Lunar New Year...
Tuesday 1st February, was the first day of the Chinese New Year, or should we say the Lunar New Year, as it is celebrated across many Asian countries. 2022 is the Year of the Tiger.
This year our Chinese pupils, SiHan, Miya, Leo, SiRu, Steve, Johnny, Jas, Amy and Johnathan, although a very long way from home and missing the huge celebrations with their own families, were able to recreate a little taste of New Year here at King’s. The Food Science and Hospitality Departments very kindly supported a cook-up. The pupils chose their recipes: spicy tomato fried egg, Sichuan broth, fried pork rib, kimchi fried pork belly and pork and mushroom dim sum. The preparation was supervised by Amy and Luke, both of whom are studying BTEC Hospitality and can use the event for their evidence portfolios.
The pupils loved chopping frying and steaming, and a few dimsum disappeared as official tastings along the way, sat down to eat at about 8pm. Red lanterns were hung, the chopsticks brought out and some exquisite green tea brewed. It was a great opportunity for them to spend some time together. What hard luck it was for Steve and Johnathan, who are most unfortunately still isolating with Covid but they both received a special delivery from their friends. I hope the contents of their ‘good luck’ red envelopes, traditional custom of New Year, was sufficient to make up for the two weeks of holiday and all the fun and fireworks they were missing.
A big thank you to House Masters and Mistresses and especially the Hospitality Department for allowing our Chinese pupils the evening to celebrate.
