King's Maths Teacher, Tim Walker, 'Chased the Sun' for Charity.
In the grey light of a Kentish pre-dawn, 10 riders from Bruton Cycling Club gathered on the coast of the Isle of Sheppey and started riding towards Burnham-on-Sea in Somerset. The occasion was the annual Chase the Sun ride, this year it was being ridden in aid of Parkinson's UK and Prostate Cancer, with the aim of reaching our destination – some 205 miles away - before dusk and still as a team.
The weather was not entirely kind. We never saw the sun but at least it didn’t rain until the last 40 miles. Mechanicals were mercifully few, 3 punctures and some running chain repairs being the sum of it, but our fabulous support crew (Sue Pitt (King's Matron) and Sam Walker (Old Brutonian) amongst others) kept the spirits up and the energy levels high.
We met some great people on route - the guy who did it on a penny farthing deserves ultimate respect - and the common goal meant there was great camaraderie amongst all those who took part. We finally rolled into Burnham-on-Sea at 8.40 pm after nearly 13 hours in the saddle (plus stops obviously!), tired and happy and still very much a team.
The links for the charities are below if you feel you are would like to donate to either of these worthwhile causes which have impacted the lives of several of the team who rode.
