One of the best times at King's is when all the Houses come together as friends and rivals for the Inter-House Music Festival. You can't beat the atmosphere. It is a fantastic experience to be there and be part of the camaraderie and to feel the fellowship of the King's pupils.
The Junior Solo Round got the Inter-House Music Festival off to a very strong start, with excellent performances from all the Houses. The round was deservedly won by Hugo from Lyon House playing Sonata in C by Donizetti. He gave a very precise and controlled performance on the flute. Hayley, from Arion House, came in second with a strong performance of Sonata in E minor by Romberg on the cello and Will from New House placed third performing Paddy’s Green Shamrock Shore arranged by Rickards.
The Senior Solo Round was won by Felix who performed Rachmaninoff’s stunning Prelude No. 4 Op. 23 for New House, but he only just beat Katie from Priory House singing I’m Here from the Broadway show The Colour Purple and Sophie from Arion House playing a Trumpet Voluntary by Boyce.
I particularly enjoyed the Ensemble Round and it was clear to see just how much preparation had been put in by the pupils from all houses. This round was won by Priory House with an impressive a cappella performance of Jolene and runners up were New House with an outstanding big band set up playing Zoot Suit Riot as arranged by George in the U6th Form. Arion House came third, performing an arrangement of the ABBA song Slipping Through my Fingers, scoring very highly too that even included an obligato glockenspiel part
By the time it came to the evening’s main event, the top three houses were all neck and neck with just one point between the top three positions. Priory House gave the stand out performance of the evening with impressive singing from the girls in a close harmony arrangement of Some Nights. Lyon House gave an impressively powerful performance of Pompeii by Bastille and had impressive layering of parts in the final build up. New House very narrowly beat Wellesley House into 3rd place.
When all the points were added up, Priory won the overall competition and beat New House by just one point. Congratulations to Priory and to all of the Houses for such a great afternoon and evening of music.
