On Monday morning Blackford and Wellesley took part in the third preliminary round of the Inter-House Debating Competition.

The motion for the debate was ‘This house believes that the spread of ‘fake news’ makes democracy impossible'. A hard fought debate saw both teams provide arguments for and against the motion with both teams drawing on recent examples of Brexit, American Presidential campaigns and the alleged interference of Russia in recent European political issues. Both teams were very impressive and had clearly researched their arguments well. However, of considerable note was the way in which both teams went about delivering their arguments. All spoke clearly and confidently and with a meaningful and varied tone that allowed all in the audience to be engaged by the debate. Blackford ran out the eventual winners and I wish both teams the best moving forward.

Old House took on Priory in the final preliminary round of this year’s debating competition. In another topic ripped from our modern headlines, the competitors took on ‘fake news’ and its impact on democracy. Both houses were well represented by their younger years, as Bodo and Lily spoke clearly and confidently. Gabriel gave an engaging performance with a well sequenced and convincing argument, while the two Katies on Priory’s team presented their ideas with passion and clarity.

Old House were the victors on the day, and congratulations go to both teams for a spirited performance.
