Debating House Activities and Competitions

The Houses put their best speakers forward for Round 2 of the Inter-House Debating Competition

On Monday, both Old and New Houses clashed in an engaging and spirited debate. Vincent from Old House 3rd Form was singled out for particular praise due to an impressive performance in his second language. However, New House won the day. They even scored a perfect 15/15 for the content of their speech due to demonstration of some thorough research on the subject. Congratulations to both teams, but especially to Charlie, Rory and Casper.

Duncan Ericson - English Teacher.

Priory and Wellesley faced each other in the second round of the Inter-House Debating. With the motion ‘This house believes that we should support games in Pyongyang’, Priory found themselves proposing the motion and Wellesley opposing. Whilst a difficult topic with both teams focussing on politics, human rights, the expression of sport and how sport/ politics are intrinsically linked, it was brilliant to see the passion put forward by both teams. What was most pleasing was the way in which the girls embraced the audience, spoke confidently and clearly whilst also bringing huge amounts of energy and passion. Leila, Amelia and Katie were outstanding in terms of their public speaking and Leila (Wellesley) was also brilliant in terms of her tactical awareness and her use of the ‘points of information’. Whilst Wellesley won the debate, both teams should be commended for the high level of debating on display and I very much look forward to seeing some fantastic debating in the future as the younger pupils progress through the school.

Dan Cupit - Deputy Head, Academic

Lyon House and Arion House delivered an excellent debate on Monday morning. Both teams had carried out an immense amount of research to formulate some carefully crafted arguments. Lyon House’s strategy and style saw them win the debate against a very impressive Arion House team. Isaac must be congratulated for his strong delivery, engaging arguments and relentless enthusiasm. Furthermore, Pepa’s speech was truly commendable given that she spoke with such clarity even though English is not her first language. The Headmaster and I thoroughly enjoyed the debate and look forward to the next round.
