Sixth Form Chemists Immerse Themselves In Cutting Edge Applied Science

Chemistry Educational Trips

On Tuesday evening, the Sixth Form Chemists attend a fabulously informative presentation on modern scanning and imaging techniques that are used in medicine.

The chemistry involved radioactive isotopes, nucleophilic substitutions, positron emissions and antimatter/matter collisions that result in the annihilation of the particles involved. The techniques are used to investigate conditions ranging from soft tissue injuries in racehorses to aggressive tumours. The equipment involved fits into a room or spreads for miles under the Swiss countryside. It was a very worthwhile and stimulating lecture that linked cutting edge medical technology to the A Level specification. These experiences continue to further challenge and stimulate our pupils in the Sixth Form. Thanks to Sherborne Girls and Boys School for the invite and for hosting this event.
