An insightful and informative trip to the University of Oxford Open Day...

On Friday 15^th September, a selection of Lower 6^th Form pupils headed to Oxford for the University of Oxford Open Day. Pupils had the opportunity to walk around the various colleges and faculty buildings to gather information and insights as to what life at such a world-renowned university is like.

Our day started with an early 7.45am departure from King’s and a two-hour journey into Oxford. As we arrived, the streets were bustling with prospective students just like us, surrounded by the astounding English-Gothic architecture of the university. After being dropped off near the centre of town, we broke off into different groups, all heading in different directions in accordance with our subject interests; these included music, physics, history and modern languages.

While others headed toward their chosen faculties, I found my way to the history department just in time for the lecture to start. I was lucky enough to listen to a third-year student lecture about the history of science - particularly how art and all the things we don’t usually consider ‘scientific’ have affected science as we know it today.

After the lecture, I headed towards the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages for a Q and A session with the various tutors at the faculty. Starting off with linguistics, I had the opportunity ask many questions with the student ambassador and tutor and then moved on to German and gained further insight into studying a language at Oxford.

In addition, other students found the science department particularly interesting, participating in the inorganic chemistry Q and A along with visiting the many colleges on offer such as Trinity, Worcester and Keble.

Overall, everyone found the day to be hugely insightful and informative about studying at Oxford University and the university application process in general. We would like to express our thanks to Dr Corrigan (Deputy Head, Teaching & Learning) and Mr Daws (Deputy Head, Sixth Form) for organising this trip and giving up their day to ensure that we had the opportunity to visit this prestigious institution.
