On 29th September 1519, King’s School Bruton was signed into life by the Bishop of London, Richard Fitzjames, the Attorney General, Sir John Fitzjames, the Chancellor of St Paul’s Cathedral, John Edmunds and Abbott William Gilbert of Bruton Monastery.
Nearly five hundred years later, the School celebrated an incredible milestone, its quincentenary. There are few schools in the south-west of England with comparable longevity. In the lead up to the big day, the School enjoyed celebrating this historic occasion with numerous events.
The documentary film below was released on 29th September 2019, exactly 500 years to the day that King's Bruton was founded. The video tells the history of our school and covers the main celebrations in our 500th year, including the memorable 500th Anniversary Day of Celebration and 500th Anniversary Ball in June 2019. The documentary is full of interviews of old and current Brutonians alongside plenty of archive footage and photos. We hope the video brings back many happy memories and also acts as a further celebration of this wonderful school.
Just below you will find a video of David Hindley, a former member of staff at King’s, inviting all to, “come and join the fun”.
As well as celebrating, it was a time of looking back and commemorating past achievements, re-establishing friendships and remembering those who have made significant contributions to the life of our school. Our logo for 2019 was been based upon the earliest version of the School Crest, which can be found in the gateway from Plox into the Old House Yard. The video below tells the story behind that logo.
We also look forward to the next phase in the life of King’s, the first part of the next five hundred years. We have built a new Music School, the legacy of the current members of the King’s family, for future generations. This building completes the quadrangle of the Old House Yard enhancing the historic heart of the School and joining other builds from the 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. The video below is of the plan we put into action for The Queen Elizabeth Music School Music School.
The video below is a time-lapse of the completed Queen Elizabeth Music School's construction.
Perhaps one of the most significant events in the Schools' history occurred on 28th March 2019 when Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II came to open The Queen Elizabeth Music School. The video below provides a great summary of this incredible day.
