The L6th Form History of Art pupils visited the Roman Villa and Museum at The Newt in Somerset. As part of their coursework unit, they are looking into the techniques of pottery, fresco painting and sculpture which were introduced to Britain during the Roman occupation.
The pupils enjoyed the videos and interactive elements to the museum, which gave them a clear indication of what life was like here in Bruton almost two thousand years ago. The museum has a stunning design to it that straddles directly across the bath house of the ancient Roman villa. Adjacent to the museum is a life size replica of the villa itself with the cubicula, atrium and kitchen. The authentic Italian Frescoes were intricately reimagined as they adorned all rooms of the villa. The mosaic floors were stunning and allowed the viewer a greater appreciation of how integral the floors were to the design of the villa. There were statues of the Roman Gods on display, a steam room, the beautifully designed gardens, and all completed with the most cohesive design elements. It really is a magical place that transforms you back in time. The last room was the VR room which really does put the icing on the cake as the Roman family entertaining their business guests with a party is played out before you. A must see experience.
