On Monday 31^st October, the Design & Technology Department were very fortunate to host Mr Nick Moon who spoke to our 5^th Form D&T pupils about the opportunities available through the world-renowned Arkwright Engineering Scholarship programme.

Mr Moon was joined by one of King’s existing Arkwright Engineering Scholars, Tia, who shared her knowledge of the application process and described some of the unique experiences that she has subsequently enjoyed following her successful induction into the programme.

The scholarships are awarded to hard-working 16-year-old pupils through a rigorous selection process, supporting them in numerous ways through their A Levels, or equivalent qualifications.

The Smallpiece Trust, who awards the scholarships, ensure that every successful applicant is sponsored by a commercial company, trade association, university, professional institution, armed service, government organisation, worshipful company, charitable trust or personal donor. This means that support is offered in a variety of different ways, for example, valuable hands-on work experience, support for your curriculum project and a personal mentor who can help you with aspects of your studies and career planning. It also puts pupils in a great place for future career aspirations in engineering as well as university applications and CVs.

Nick Moon presented an exciting insight into the modern world of engineering and shared with pupils how the application process worked and what they can get from the programme. It was a pleasure to welcome him into the Design Block. Those who attended were very motivated by his talk and we are extremely grateful to him for coming to King’s and sharing this insight into the Arkwright application process and the opportunity it brings.

So far, my scholarship has opened up many opportunities for me. There are constantly online talks being offered to help me expand my knowledge in engineering and choose the right path for myself, as well as contact days and mentoring. I was given a mentor by the Royal Navy, as they are my sponsors. I regularly contact them to ask for feedback on my coursework, advice on university choices and we also discuss and break down some engineering problems, and I have found it very valuable to be able to get an experienced engineer's perspective on these things. However, my favourite thing so far about this scholarship is the opportunity for Connect Days. Recently, I took a leadership course with the RAF in Chingford; I worked in an unfamiliar setting and with a new group on complex engineering problems, and I also met a group of fantastic people who share my interests and mindset, and I still keep in contact with many of them. The whole process has prepared me for my future by educating me on other opportunities and expanding my knowledge, so that I am more prepared as I progress in my studies. I hope to continue to meet people and further my knowledge, as well as use this opportunity as a springboard into a career in engineering.
