On Friday 20th April, the Chapel Choir made the short journey to Wells Cathedral to sing a service of Choral Evensong, writes Ashley Marshfield, Director of Choral Studies.
The choir were on excellent form - music for the service was almost all by Herbert Sumsion including his settings of: the Preces and Responses, Canticles in G and the anthem They That Go Down To The Sea In Ships. The Chapel Choir sang with particular attention to blend and the acoustic was used to the full. The singing of Psalm 104 was particularly impressive with careful attention to dynamics and diction. The highlight of the service for me was the anthem with its word painting and the Chapel Choir really brought the piece to life. The Summer Term cathedral visit is always filled with mixed emotions for me as it is the final visit for the U6th Form – thank you to them all for their outstanding contribution over the past five years.
The Canon Chancellor led the service and was very complimentary; he invited the Chapel Choir to make a return visit and not leave it two years between visits! It was good to have a numerically healthy congregation to support, with parents, grandparents, staff and visitors to the Cathedral. My congratulations to all involved!
