On Wednesday 13th November, the Sixth Form pupils who study French and Spanish languages at King’s Bruton, spent most of the day at Bristol University and attended lectures in French & Spanish.
We all had a fantastic time and listened to different teachers/lecturers who explained to us different topics in France and Spain.
Madame Agathe Webb - Head of MFL
Please read some feedback from the pupils themselves:
“At first, I would like to take the opportunity to say thank you for making it possible for us to go to Bristol University, I enjoyed the lecture and found it very helpful for our further classes. The lecture we attended was given by Señora Meira-Garci, who talked about the history of Spain, more specifically, about monarchies and dictatorship. She began the lecture with defining important political terms, for example what it means to be left or right, giving examples for current politicians, that are left or right. She continued to introduce us to the two extreme positions of left-oriented and right-oriented people, who started the civil war in Spain; los "rojos" (los republicanos) y los "falanges" (las fuerzas political de la derecha). Afterwards she talked about the further course of the war and how Franco became the dictator of Spain. To show us, what life under his dictatorship was like, Señora Meira-Garci showed us short film excerpts and also a video, that showed how Franco used propaganda, because the video showed that it is the role of a women to only care for her husband. I found the video shocking!
I liked the lecture, because I learned many things that I didn't know and also some surprising facts, for example, that the terms "left" and "right" are used in politics, because this is how the politicians in the French parliament were seated. I also liked that Señora Meira-Garci made the lecture interactive and funny by making us play the Spanish National Lottery game”. - Written by Julia
“The lecture I heard at Bristol Uni was about volunteering. I enjoyed the facts and how the speaker used language which was quite simple and easy for me to understand”. - Written by Llewelyn
