Rugby

It was another spectacular weekend of weather for the King’s rugby programme. King’s U14 started the weekend with a convincing win over Warminster, where the boys scored an impressive 10 tries. The U15 rugby team were on the opposite end and played a tough Warminster side. Despite losing, they took lots of development opportunities. The U16s continued their great season with a stylish performance, beating Warminster 36-10, with two tries from Issa A. The 2nd XV was involved in a triangular vs Wellington and Queen’s Taunton. They first played a Queen’s 1st XV, losing narrowly by 1 point, before swiftly moving onto face a strong Wellington 2nd XV, losing by only 2 points. This was two great performances by the 2nd XV, showing their growth and development as a squad. Lastly, the 1st XV, finished the weekend against Warminster in a tough encounter where we saw several errors in the first half, to allow Warminster into the game. The second half was a different story as the boys came out firing and managed to finish strong, with a 33-7 win. A special mention goes to Ollie W, for his 50m, solo try.

Hockey

The girls’ hockey block with King’s College Taunton was a closely contested one as there were victories for the 1st and 4th XI teams, draws for the 2nd and 3rd XI, and narrow defeats for the U15A and U14A teams. There were player of the match performances from Harriet V, Lily C, Martha K-H, Hannah M, Eva K, Naomi H and Charlotte W. Earlier in the week, the boys’ U18 indoor team followed the successes of the U18 Girls and U16 Boys as they won their regional preliminary tournament to also qualify for the West Finals. They comfortably beat Sherborne (3-0) and Canford (5-2) on their way to victory. Good luck to the U16 girls in their prelim on Thursday.

Football

After an excellent result last week against Dauntsey’s which ended in a 1-1 draw after an inspired all round team performance with Fred F and Ag F leading the team on the front foot, this week saw the team face a clinical counter attacking Millfield team with great strength and depth within their squad. A top-class goalkeeping performance kept at bay our attacking line up with Josh H, Louis R, Jesse P and Tommy W having multiple attempts on goal.  A special mention must go to Otis B for stepping up in goal, as well as great drive and determination coming from both our captains Louis and Tommy.

Badminton

The badminton team played really well against a Downside team that included a Somerset County semi-final pairing. It was great to see our Juniors taking part in their first match. Notable successes: Oscar D was paired with SiHan C and they won 2 out of 3 games. Brookland C was paired with Aurelien P and won 1, lost 1. Alasdair E and Lovis C  won 1, lost 1. Senior successes: James S and Toby F won 2 out of 3 games. Doubles score: King's Bruton 7, Downside 12. There was some great singles play, too as Toby F won his match against the Downside no. 2 player and Ollie G who beat his opponent 22-20 in gruelling match. Singles score: King's Bruton 3, Downside 6.

Netball - Somerset Schools’ County Netball Tournaments - U14 and U16

On Saturday 12th October we took U14 and U16 netball squads to King’s Taunton for their annual Somerset Schools’ County Netball Tournaments. It’s always a tricky one for our U14s being the first run out on the courts as a new squad and getting their head back into a netball frame of mind. It was a useful morning, trialling players in a variety of positions and all gaining tournament experience which will, no doubt, help them in future years.

Leading by example our U16s really impressed. Two years older and with two years experience they really shone. With Wells Cathedral School, Millfield, Westfield Academy, King’s Taunton, Queen’s College and Wellington School all competing, King's Bruton finished 3rd with a very closely contested game against the eventual winners. Special mentions to Isabella McG who was on fire in a shooting role, Ella C in defence and Aurelia McI (Player of the Tournament).
